The homeowners in North St. Paul contacted us, wanting to add a fire pit to their backyard. Their recently-purchased home had an existing patio off of the back of the house. They thought a separate fire pit in the back corner would offer an inviting spot to relax in the evenings.

We presented two options. One required excavation of a hill, installation of a retaining wall, and then building a fire pit and patio. Our second proposal was remodeling their existing patio and incorporating and area for a dining space, along with a much closer fire pit. This proposal offered a more extensive outdoor living area which could accommodate larger gatherings. The bonus: we’d than double their outdoor living-space for the same budget as the smaller, separate fire pit area they had initially envisioned.

The homeowners decided to go with our suggested option to incorporate all of the areas in one larger outdoor living space. We started by removing the existing patio and re-installing the base material while enlarging the area. We were able to re-use the existing pavers, while bringing in new concrete pavers to increase the patio space. Also, as part of the patio project we added plantings and landscape mulch to soften the existing boulder retaining walls and make the space more inviting. Landscape lighting was added to extend the time they could enjoy the space into the evening and linger by the fire.
